A roof (whether it be leaf, tile or canvas), a fire (woodburner, kadai or forest floor) and some wholesome  sustenance (foraged, caught, hunted, brewed, grown or, even, just plain old bought) for me and mine, and I am a very happy man. But, I feel that I am in an ever decreasing minority in the UK.

I am no hermit; I embrace the positive trappings of modernity, and my Children are being taught to be 'tech savvy' in equal proportions to 'country wise' but, as a society, I believe that the latter is, sadly, being lost, and not to the greater good.

Even residing in a rural Parish, as I am fortunate to do, the Primary School have queried me on not less than three occasions, presumably casting doubt upon my parental judgment and, by inference, suggesting that the Child in question was, in some way, being reared... odd!

The First Offence...
A companion hacking horse reached the end of life, at a good age, and was appropriately dispatched. It was explained to 'Thing 1' that following the animal's good life, it had been humanely dealt with when the time ultimately came (a responsibility I take very seriously), and had been committed to the earth from where it would be naturally carbon recycled.

The First Charge...
Honesty With A Minor - it was suggested that it may have been more appropriate to suggest that said horse had gone to a "pasture in the sky", and that the "truth" may have been upsetting both my Child and the others of his contemporaries that he shared it with.
The First Defence...

There was scientific evidence to support my explanation, and absolutely none to the contrary. Further, I felt at greater risk of creating yet another emotionally challenged adult if I did not disclose my understanding of the natural truth from the earliest possible opportunity.

The Second Offence...

A home Cocker bitch came in season, and was served by our home Cocker dog. The process was explained to 'Thing 1' from start to finish, including the reproductive cycle of the bitch, the naturally occurring urge of the dog, and the resulting pups (the cuteness and departure of which was a part of the wider experience for him).
The Second Charge...
Gross Honesty With A Minor - it was suggested that such sexually explicit material may, in fact, prove deleterious to the development of 'Thing 1' and, (perceived by me as more important during my berating), his sharing of the experience might negatively effect his cohort and / or offend their Parents.

The Second Defence...

There was scientific evidence to support my explanation, and absolutely none to the contrary. Further, I felt at greater risk of creating yet another emotionally challenged adult if I did not disclose my understanding of the natural truth from the earliest possible opportunity.
